'AI Teachin's Vision

From Empower to Inspire: Why We Changed Our Guiding Vision

For a long time, the word empower has been at the heart of educational dialogue. It suggests that we, as educators, have the power to bestow upon our students—whether that's skills, knowledge, or confidence. It's a great word, but lately, I've been reflecting on whether it's the most authentic fit for the true vision behind AI Teachin'.

I've realized I've been choosing a different word: inspire.

While "empower" is about giving someone the authority or means to do something, "inspire" is about igniting a spark from the inside out. It's not about what we, the teachers, give to our students. It's about what we help our students discover within themselves.

This subtle but profound shift in thinking led us to a new guiding vision that feels more authentic to everything we're building:

"To inspire authentic learning and responsible innovation in the digital age."

Why Inspire?

When we inspire, we're not just filling a vessel; we're lighting a fire. A student who is inspired feels a deep, internal desire to learn and create. This passion is the engine of authentic learning. It's what drives them to ask questions beyond the curriculum, to seek out new knowledge, and to build something truly their own.

This vision is about:

  • Authentic Learning: It moves us away from the "gotcha" culture of AI detection and towards creating projects and assessments that are so engaging, so personal, and so rooted in their own curiosity that a student wouldn't even wantan AI to do the work for them.

  • Responsible Innovation: We're not just giving students tools; we're helping them build a moral compass for a digital world. We're inspiring them to use technology as a force for good—to solve real problems, to create, and to innovate with a sense of purpose.

The New Framework for Modern Learners

This vision is at the heart of a new Venn diagram I've created, which outlines three key areas of focus for modern learners:

  • Prompting with Purpose: It’s not just about typing a question; it's about asking the right questions to get the best outcomes. This involves understanding how to use frameworks like PARTS to think critically before we create.

  • Critical Thinking and Ethical Use: This is about more than just knowing what a tool can do. It’s about being able to discern bias, verify information, and use AI in a way that respects academic integrity and their own learning.

  • Authentic Creation: This is the most crucial part. It’s the sweet spot where students use these tools not to replace their own effort, but to enhance it. They are inspired to apply their own knowledge, passion, and unique voice to create something meaningful.

My hope is that this new vision will resonate with you. We are not just equipping students with skills; we are inspiring them to be curious, ethical, and creative learners for a lifetime.

What are your thoughts on this approach? I'd love to hear what "inspires" you in your classroom.
